Serbia and NATO Host Disaster Relief Exercise

How would NATO, its partner countries and other international organisations respond to an emergency situation such as a strong earthquake? That scenario was recently tested during a major disaster response exercise in Serbia. The exercise, dubbed “Srbija 2018” and jointly organised by NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) and the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia, involved 2,000 personnel from almost 40 NATO member and partner countries and several international organisations such as the European Union and the Red Cross. The aim of the exercise was to improve interoperability in international disaster response operations. The drills provided an opportunity for first responders to work alongside the military using the scenario of a strong earthquake to test skills. The exercise was held from 8 to 11 October 2018. The EADRCC is NATO’s principal emergency response mechanism in the Euro-Atlantic area. It is active all year round, operational on a 24/7 basis and involves NATO’s 29 Allies and all partner countries.
